Every player is secretly given a number and stands close to the person who is ‘it’. ‘It’ then throws the ball straight up and the other players start to run away. As the ball is in the air and above everyone’s head, ‘it’ calls out the number of one of the other players and then runs away. The player whose number was called must run back and catch the ball (for different ages and abilities you can say that the ball has to be caught before it touches the floor or that the ball can bounce once or twice first). Once that person has the ball, they yell, ‘Spud!’ Then everyone else must freeze. The person with the ball must try to touch one of the players with the ball. Those frozen must not move their feet from the ground but can duck and dip out of the way. ‘it’ also cannot move from where they caught the ball. If someone gets touched by the ball, that new person gets their first of four penalties and a letter (first S, then P, then U, then D) and is now ‘it’. If they miss, the person who threw the ball is ‘it’ for another round and receives a penalty. Once someone has four penalties and can spell SPUD then they are out.
